Response to Criticism of Belief in Psychic Phenomenon

Dianna Narciso, atheist and “Rationalism Examiner” of examiner.com, wrote the following:

“Meanwhile, Scott Petullo and Stephen Petullo, over at Opposing Views give us seven tips on getting rid of ghosts. They have fourteen years of experience in ridding people and their homes of ghosts, so they must know what they’re talking about. The “final step in ghostbusting,” they say, “is often overlooked.” Ghostbusters forget to lead the spirit into the light where it belongs. Without this step, the ghost will just continue to hang around.

“Their steps in a nutshell are these: figure out what kind of ghost it is. Research the house (which is really just to help with step one). Then tell the spirit it’s dead and to go into the light.

“Apparently they can’t always find the light.

“If it won’t go, then you continue on with the next steps: Visualize light. Yeah, that’s right. You visualize light. Think about light. Maybe the ghosts are mind readers? Burn some sage. Then repeat step three (tell the dude he’s dead). But this time, call in the ghost’s loved ones from the other side to help you.

“Perhaps this step should be one of the first steps.

“The last step is brilliant: “If the energy does not want to leave, call in God, guides of the Light, and for tougher cases, archangels Michael and Sandalphon for assistance in guiding the lost soul(s) to the Light.”

“Yes. Call in God first and then the guides of the “light.” But if they’re really, really stubborn and God is not enough (!), call in some angels. They take on the tougher jobs God can’t handle.

“They really should include instructions on keeping a straight face while performing these steps.

“It’s October. Better stock up on sage.”

Our response:

Dianna,

Your perspective is very interesting.

We’re always fascinated by those who draw conclusions derived from the limits of their understanding.

Based on our experience, calling in those specific archangels has a greater positive impact.

As for burning sage (i.e., smudging), and why it disperses negative energy, you may want to ask Native Americans who have been using it for centuries.

You simply can’t explain the “why,” or prove that some things exist.

For example, how is it to be proven that unconditional love exists? Since you can’t invalidate the theory that it exists (and most everyone does hold that theory–that unconditional love exists), do you rule it out as myth? Unfortunate, if so.

Are you one to also scoff at the practice of meditation? Do you deny that mediation offers distinct benefits?

We understand that this material may sound “out there” compared to conventional thinking. However, an objective attitude and direct experience allow you to develop an appreciation for the phenomenon, after you’ve ruled out other possibilities (e.g., your imagination).

Our opinion is that the third dimension, the earth plane, isn’t the only plane of existence, and the soul is eternal. Humans aren’t just hunks of meat with a brain. As a soul, your journey doesn’t start here, and it doesn’t end here.

Also, if you were to read some of our articles, publications, and, or peruse our websites, you would see that we present our ideas as theories, and base our findings on our long-term, objective empirical research.

We also readily concede that much in the New Age marketplace is cosmic fu-fu, only serving a strong appetite for escapism.

We’re not surprised that many people are naturally skeptical about metaphysical subjects, but we’ve found that the majority of people have a ghost story of their own.

“I don’t believe that ghosts are ‘spirits of the dead’ because I don’t believe in death. In the multiverse, once you’re possible, you exist. And once you exist, you exist forever one way or another. Besides, death is the absence of life, and the ghosts I’ve met are very much alive. What we call ghosts are lifeforms just as you and I are.”

  1. I am in total agreement with your article. This statement being my truth as well, “Our opinion is that the third dimension, the earth plane, isn’t the only plane of existence, and the soul is eternal. Humans aren’t just hunks of meat with a brain. As a soul, your journey doesn’t start here, and it doesn’t end here.” That is my truth as well.
